How We Got Here...
As the owners of this company (John and Brenda), we wanted to provide our customers with our first experiences with the field and how our company came to be. In August of 1984, we received devastating news from the Mass Dept of Health, that our first-born child, Kelleigh, had been lead poisoned. Her blood lead level was 67 ug/DL, with the current definition of lead poisoning being 10 ug/DL. Unfortunately for us during this time of confusion and fear, her pediatrician was on vacation. After many anxious calls before receiving a response, we were ordered to rush her to Boston Children’s Hospital, where she spent a week on what is known as chelation therapy.

We soon discovered that we had inadvertently poisoned our own child during the re-modeling of our home. We knew about alare in apples but not the dangers of lead in paint. Our biggest mistake was sand blasting the outside of the house without being properly educated on the risks of lead exposure. The picture below is of Kelleigh putting highly contaminated dirt in her mouth. This may well be the moment that she was poisoned.

Needless to say, we were outraged that we could purchase an older home without being warned of the danger that lead paint posed. Due to the severity of harm that lead exposure can cause, Massachusetts has very strict lead laws. As if our child’s wellbeing was not enough of a concern, we soon found ourselves potentially facing criminal charges from the State of Massachusetts. If we did not have our house deleaded within 30 days, the Dept of Health would automatically file criminal charges. We had immediately tried to find an approved contractor to delead our home, and thankfully after six weeks we found a company that did a very subpar job. Between the delay in availability from contractors, and the experiences we had just gone through with our own child, we realized there was a need for more professional contractors in this field to help families in situations such as our own. This is when John began his first step in the field with a Safety-First Deleading Certificate. He went on to become politically involved with lead paint poisoning initiatives. These efforts included lobbying for legislation and working with state agencies in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island to implement regulations and licensing procedures.
